Angelina Jolie, Double Mastectomy


On May 14, 2013 people around the world where shock to the revelation of one of the Class A celebrity in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie in her column in The New York Times, The Opinion Page. 

She was brave enough to tell publicly that it was her choice to undergo in a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer. 


"Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex."

She also mention that she carry a gene of BRCA1 which is sharply increases her risk of having breast and ovarian cancer. Her doctors had estimate it to have 87 percent of risk for breast cancer and 50 percent risk in ovarian cancer.

What is Preventive Mastectomy?

Preventive mastectomy is the removal of one or both breasts by means of surgery to prevent the risk of breast cancer in woman who are at high risk in developing it. It is also called prophylactic or risk-reducing mastectomy. It was suggested to have the preventive mastectomy in able to reduce the chance of developing breast cancer for about 90 percent. 

And many women who undergo this kind of surgery are also decide to have the breast reconstruction to restore the shape of their breast.
