Ask any entrepreneur his secret to success, and he would tell you that it is more than just luck. For Victor and Evelyn Lam, the powerhouse couple behind the Mrs. Lam Rice brand, it was really the four Ps of perseverance, persistence, parental care, and prayers for God’s blessings that guided them throughout the years.

Fact is, the family of Victor Lam has been in the rice business for generations before his generation decided to venture into other careers. He learned much of what he knows about the business from his uncles. That’s why he was confident of going back into rice trading in 2000.

After deciding on naming the business after his wife, he went through the arduous process of finding suppliers and trying out different varieties of rice. Unsteady supply from rice traders meant that quality would vary from one purchase to another, from one harvest to another. There was the also the issue of storage. Being new in the business, they learned that rice mills often did not entertain small orders.

“We could not sell rice without a consistent supplier and quality,” says Mrs. Lam. “We had to build our own brand, and consistent quality would be the key to our success.”

The Lams bit the bullet. They ordered an initial stock of 40 sacks of rice, thinking that what they couldn’t sell, they would just cook and serve on their dinner table. Only then did they learn that you could not keep rice in storage for more than three months, because weevils start to grow.

Door-to- door sales

The Lams started to personally sell their rice door-to- door in villages near their home, distributing flyers themselves, and eventually advertising in village publications. They did the deliveries themselves, using their own car and tapping their family driver. Their cook, whom she discovered had an extensive knowledge on rice varieties, helped out by answering and taking down phone inquiries.

Their base of loyal clients eventually grew from their relatives and close friends when they started placing their products in supermarkets. When their first big order came in, her parent’s and sister’s households helped in delivering their commitments in time. Mrs. Lam Rice had become a family endeavor.

Getting into supermarkets proved to be a tough task considering there are already a number of brands in the market.

“Honesty is very important when you deal with people,” says Mrs. Lam. “I remember the first clients we had. Initially we were told they don’t have space to display our rice. But after being very truthful in our answers to their queries, we were allowed to sell two varieties, namely Sinandomeng and Dinorado.”

To stand out from the crowd, the Mrs. Lam Rice brand was the first in the market to introduce vacuum-packed rice as a means of prolonging shelf life. From then on, sales started to grow slowly.

“We started getting accepted in various supermarkets, engaging in retail on a per kilo basis, as in wet markets. We kept our margins very low, and delivered best quality and tasting freshly milled rice. Our rice undergoes processing at par with big Thai rice mills,” says Mrs. Lam

Product expansion

Mrs. Lam Rice caters presently to the broad A to E market segment, from the budget-conscious to discriminating ones. Its premium local rice varieties include Dinorado Special, Whole Grain Sinandomeng, Long Grain, Sinandomeng Special, Intan, Sinandomeng, and Laon—palay that has been aged for a year for those who prefer fluffy and non-sticky grains with more yield. Its specialty varieties includes Thai Jasmine Milagrosa, Japanese short grain variety, Sticky or Glutinous (Malagkit), and Thai White Rice.

“When my father was diagnosed with cancer, we searched for an organic rice supplier and found a cooperative in Nueva Ecija to ensure a steady supply of church supervised farming and certified Organic Red and Organic Brown Rice,” says Mrs. Lam.

“Organic Rice is highly recommended for health enthusiasts as it is absolutely free from synthetic pesticides or chemicals,” she explained. “This is important because in semi polished rice, only the husk is removed. There is no polishing. That’s why we are able to avoid residual pesticides when we eat Organic Rice.”

The company also attended international expositions to upgrade its packaging to international standards. It started working from a small storage facility, roughly around 80 square meters, to intentionally limit its stock to just a few days’ supply of freshly milled rice. It counts top Chinese and Thai restaurants in Metro Manila among its loyal clients.

Breaking new grounds

For the past 16 years, Mrs. Lam Rice has relied on word-of- mouth and client recall to promote its products. However, the firm believes it is now time to actively market its inventory of rice varieties. It recently signed up actress and celebrity mom Danica Sotto-Pingris as its brand ambassador.

“Danica is already serving Mrs Lam’s Rice to her family, and they enjoy it. So, she is the perfect brand endorser for us,”Mrs. Lam proudly declares.

The endorsement of Sotto-Pingris of their rice varieties highlight the family orientation Mrs. Lam Rice wanted when the Lams were searching a name for their product.

“When we were deciding what to call it, my husband wanted a name that was more family sounding,” she recalled.

And the rest is now history.
Have you ever wonder that the rice that your family will eat and you served in your table was a fake rice?

I never thought that it could be a reality because the reality... it was a total nightmare. Even though our country can produce more and more rice. We have to be vigilant when it come to our food in our plate because we even imported rice from other country and to make it safer for our family.

Let us teach our family to love locally and traceable food. We should know the origins of our foods and how it's grown. It makes our family protected and more healthy. We even helped our local farmers by buying their crops.

Before I heard about the artificial eggs from China and now the plastic rice which being exported to several Asian countries. Although this news was reported last 2011 but until now it make me feel so scared.

What the hell are they thinking about this?

Why Chinese do this and sold on the Chinese markets and now on its way into other Asian countries like India, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The most alarming is that it was also found in many known brands. According to one local news source, that these fake rice is undetectable because it was mixed with normal rice pack.

It was said in Weekly Hongkong newspaper, China is mass producing fake rice. This rice is a mixed of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plastic polymer. It is formed in mixing the potatoes and sweet potatoes into the shape of rice grains and adding industrial synthetic resins.

Oh my, I can't even imagine I will digest those fake rice into my tummy and much worst with my kid.

Unfortunately, health expert says that such  fake rice can seriously damage our digestive system and be very poisonous because of the resin. You can also have gastritis and other stomach related diseases.

Check out the reported videos below;

I hope that our government should be more aware of this thing. We should be more careful in choosing our food for our family.

And look... here's the video on how they do it;

As a citizen of this country, we should share our part by spreading the news about this fake rice grains. So that people are more aware and knowledgeable. I hope it won't reach us all here in the Philippines.

I used not to finish the food in my plate before but not when I start working and earn money. I often told my friends to eat everything in their plates every time we dined out. Even today, that I have my personal family and starting to build good habits in our own table. I used to force my kid to finish his food because, as I always say to him, "not all people eat food that you are eating." Telling him that he is lucky enough to have more than 3 meals a day.

More and more people around the world have no food in their plates while other is not being mindful of wasting their food. In a research, it says that 50% of food supplies end up in garbage, and it was sad to know.

I'm glad to hear and to know that Healthy Options has an advocacy to stop food wastage using social media, and they call it "Love Food, Don't Waste." And I love the idea of discouraging and aiming to reduce food wastage.

We can help raise this campaign of Healthy Options by participating in the "Love Food, Don't Waste" campaign. Healthy Options is activating "Foodless Plate" where we can help by making donations to Hands On Manila.

So what are you waiting for, take a picture of your finish meal every where you are and post it in Instagram and other social media sites with a hashtag, #foodlessplate. Don't forget to tag Healthy Options.

Every mom has her own story when it comes to feeding her child. Every meal times becomes a daily struggle but i believe that every moms knows how to cope with this problems. Some moms resort to bribing, giving treats or gifts whenever their child finishes his lunch while other transform into a monster moms and others just give in, thinking that eating unhealthy food is better than not eating at all.

Children are easily tempted by unhealthy food because it seems fun and exciting to eat and taste better because it has flavors, colors and textures. Ages 4-7 years old are the stage where kids learned to make their own choices and will tell you what they want. So, at this age the threat of the Diet Shift starts.

Wyeth Nutrition's AQIVA recognizes this problem, and has partnered with moms to help secure their children's nutrition and health. Recently, Aqiva launched "Food Talk", an event where mothers helped to educate how to fight the Diet Shift of kids and provided them with empowering solutions.

Its a mom-to-mom talk led by the celebrity mom and TV host Mikee Cojuanco-Jaworski. She also experienced the diet shift with her children. Child and health experts are also there to give advice and tips on how to deal with the Diet Shift. Dr. Bernadette Benitez, a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Specialist and Ms. Luz Callanta, a nutrition Expert and Lecturer.

In a recent study done by Dr. Emilie Flores regarding the dietary characteristics of Filipino children, ages 1-6 years old from NCR, its is alarming to know that only 20% consumed fruits and vegetable at least once a day and meet the minimum acceptable diet standards based on the WHO indicators. Also, only a third received adequate amount of complementary & iron-rich foods. It is very unfortunate that this inadequacy in nutrient intake happens at the crucial age of a child's development.

During the event, mothers realized that to teach children how to eat healthy, they must understand why the unhealthy food appeal to children in the first place. That is why Celebrity Chef Jackie Laudico of Bistro Filipino helped the mothers and guest how to prepare their healthy meals that kids will enjoy. She said that she always plays around with three main elements which are the color, shape and texture when preparing meals for children. She showcased her techniques and allow guests to have a hands-on experience in preparing kid-friendly dishes.

She demonstrate how to prepare the Very Berry Pops - cake pops made from camote cake and berries, Vegan Burger - made from soy and grains with rice pilaf served with vegetable sticks and dips, and the Kiddie Canapes - whole wheat bread with cheese, veggies and grilled or baked fish and chicken cut and sliced in interesting shapes.

It was so much fun and I think children will love to have it because it has different colors, shapes and texture that are pleasing to their eyes. It will definitely caught their attention. With this healthy options drinking milks like Aqiva will adds nutrients for kids daily allowances.

Harvard School of Public Health Nutrition Source is to provide a timely information on diet and nutrition for health professionals and the public so that we can learn more the benefit of eating healthy in our daily life.
Healthy Eating Plate was created by nutrition experts at Harvard School of Public Health to educate us how to have a blue print for planning our well-balanced meals.

In your Healthy Eating Plate, first, you have to fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruits. Go for more color and variety in this portion of plate. Second, A quarter of your plate is for full grains such as whole wheat, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta because they are less processed.

Next is put a healthy source of protein in the last quarter of your plate such as fish, chicken, beans or nuts. You can have an egg a day but limit your red meat and processed meats.

Followed by good plant based vegetable oils like olive, canola, soy, corn, sunflower, peanut, etc. The glass bottle signifies the healthy oil you need.

Then completing your healthy plate in your meal in a glass of water or a cup of coffee or tea with a little or no sugar is best. Limit your milk and other dairy products to one or two servings per day and also limit your juice or soda to a small glass per day.

Lastly, stay active is one of the secrets to control weight gain.

Healthy Eating Pyramid is the foundation of your daily exercise and weight control. It has a strong influence in staying healthy.
The logic is simple because exercise and weight control is linked to each other with an uncomplicated rule of balancing energy.

Weight change = calories in - calories out

When you burn as many calories each day as you take it, there is nothing would be left storing in your fat cells, and your weight remains the same. However, if you eat more than you burn, then you will end up adding more fats and pounds in your body.

Let us take a look at the bricks in the Healthy Eating Pyramid;

Whole Grains will give us carbohydrates such as oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, and brown rice. Our body needs carbohydrates that give us energy.

Healthy Fats and Oils is surprisingly at the near base, indicating that it's okay to have it although not all types of fats are allowed but the healthy fats like olive, canola, soy, corn, sunflower, peanut and other vegetable oils only.

Vegetables and Fruits has an ample advantage. It will help you to decrease the chances of heart attack or stroke, protecting you to some types of cancer, lowering your blood pressure and helping you to avoid some intestinal ailment and can guard you against muscular degeneration. Potatoes are not counted as the vegetable because it has the same effect on blood sugar like refined grains and sweets, and uses sparingly in the Healthy Eating Pyramid.

Nuts, Seeds, Beans, and Tofu are plant foods that is excellent source of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals like black beans, garbanzos, lentils, etc. and some other nuts that contains healthy fats like almonds, walnuts, peanuts, etc. are good for your heart. Eating this kind of beans and nuts instead of red meat or process meat can help you lowering the risk of having heart disease and diabetes.

Fish, Poultry, and Eggs are also important for it can as well be the source of protein. Eating fish can reduce heart disease while chicken are can be low saturated fat.  An egg a day is fine but for people with diabetes or heart disease should only have it for three times a week.

Dairy or Vitamin D and Calcium will help us to have strong bones. However, we should limit it in 1 to 2 servings per day only. High dairy intakes can be associated will increase the risk of ovarian cancers or fatal prostate.
Nevertheless, you can get calcium by taking calcium supplements and vitamin D to meet your daily needs.

Red Meat, Processed Meat, Butter, Refined Grains, Potatoes, Sugary Drinks and Sweets, and Salts are all staples at the top because it can cause increases in blood sugar which can be lead to weight gain, diabetes, hear disease and other chronic diseases.

Just remember the basic guidelines in Healthy Eating Pyramid that healthy diet is having more foods from the base of the pyramid than from the higher levels of the pyramid.  Choosing a variety of fresh, whole foods from the groups will ensure you are getting the right nutrients that you need and the only foods that are off-limits are those who are on top of the pyramids.

Following this will help you decide which one to place in your Healthy Eating Plate for more effective and healthy you!
